Shopping for the Vstar. . .

This is the first time I'm buying a bike new, and haven't even bought a new car in my 30 years on your planet. I figured I'd ask your advice and share today's experience:

Now that we're certain we're buying before the end of the season (no rush, really); I visited my first dealership today -- Mcbride Cycle in Toronto. The dude gave me this quote in Canadian funds:

9899

+200 PDI
+200 Freight
+200 finance charge
+70 lein registry
+68 licence fee
+1595.55 (8% Provincial Sales Tax; 7% Goods & Services Tax)

For a total of $12232.55

He said that the finance charge gets cut in half if I go and get my own loan from the bank. In hindsight, I don't know why that wouldn't go away completely.

He then showed me this book this book that listed thier cost as 8000 and change.

What the hell is this licence fee? Don't I go to the Ministry of Transportation for that?

Anyways, I lowballed him and told him I didn't plan on spending more than 10 grand, after taxes and all the crap charges and left my number, told him that if he ever could swing it, to call me. He said there was no way he could do that deal, that he would only be making "like 700 and change".

So I came home surfed around and found that the bike's cost to the dealer is $8349.73 CAD.

Next time I go shopping, I'll bring the document I downloaded with me. But first, a couple of questions for you:

1 -- what do you think of the offer they gave me?
2 -- what would be a reasonable deal for me to push for next time I go out shopping?
I'm thinking of offering $9100 on the purchase price, before taxes and crap charges. That gives the dealer $750 immediate profit, and then $250 profit in holdback fees that comes from the manufacturer (found out the holdback is 3% of the dealer's price - they get this back from the manufacturer after the sale).
After $400 for Freight and PDI, and .15% taxes and the $68 licence fee is in, that would put me at $11,003.20.
Is that reasonable?

THe price the dealer gave me In USD:

8177.53

+165.22 PDI
+165.22 Freight
+165.22 finance charge
+57.82 lein registry
+56.17 licence fee
+1317.87 (8% Provincial Sales Tax; 7% Goods & Services Tax)

For a total of $10103.70

Is that reasonable?

UPDATE!!!

Just got off the phone with this dude in another dealership. He's got the bike I want on his floor as a demo, ready to go at $9050 CAD, or $7424.27 USD or 6183.98 EUR.

On top of that, he wants $350 CAD for both frieght and PDI, that's 289.01 USD, 239.92 EUR and 12,566.98 INR (Indian Rupees).

I was in the shower -- forgot to ask about the mileage, but I'm going to head out tomorrow morning to check it out. Thinking about starting at a bid of about $8500 CAD, or 7019.74 USD, or 5807.96 EUR, or 305337.93 INR, or 392363.70 PHP (Phillipines Peso); taking into consideration the above as well.

What do you guys think?

A lot of places won't charge you frieght if they "like you." Take that price to the competition and see what happens.

At the end of the day they need your money more then you need their bike.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Hey Dude!

Long story short. Buy used if it is in good shape, has had the first service done - less than 500-1000 miles. No cosmetic damage.
I mean look that thing over good - take you time and don't be intimidated

If your sales guy is not givin in in Aug - he will in november.
As previous post said. They need the money more than you need the bike.

That said get a cheap a$$ bike for the rest of summer to practise skills on.

You will need to do that anyway before you get on down the road - especially two up.

I saw a number of bikes I would have bought if I had not bought new.
I got a good deal, but I probably jumped the gun.

Go to Blackfootmotorsports.com for what will likely be the best price in Canada. They are a volume dealer and they seem to set the standard so it would be a good place to start comparison shopping.(I realize that they are too far away but the price should be matchable).

When I tried to get someone to match the Blackfootmotorsports prices I was told that the "frieght" from them was exhorbitant. Upwards of $800 for an 1100. I don't know if it's true, but I couldn't get them to come down any on the price, no matter what I did. So I bought from someone else.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
