2011 Harley-Davidson XR1200X

The XR1200X is Harley-Davidson® Sportster performance honed to its finest edge. Equipped with fully-adjustable Showa® front and rear suspension components, the 2011 XR1200X can be dialed in to match rider weight, riding style and road conditions. The XR1200X combines this premium suspension with enhanced front brakes and the responsive punch of a high-compression, 1200cc Evolution® V-Twin engine in a dynamic, street-performance motorcycle.

With a tank and tail section designed to evoke the legendary Harley-Davidson XR750 - the king of the gritty American flat-track scene - the XR1200X puts its mechanical character on display. Wide flat-track bars and rearset footpegs position an assertive rider for active control. The XR1200X has a blacked-out powertrain and exhaust, revised tank graphics, and black wheels with an orange rim pinstripe.

Key Harley-Davidson XR1200X Features

Showa Big Piston Front fork (BPF) eliminates many of the internal components used in a cartridge-type fork, resulting in lighter overall fork weight. The large-diameter of the BPF internal piston allows a reduction in damping pressure for outstanding feedback and smooth action. Rebound and compression damping may be fine tuned with adjuster screws located on top of the fork bolts. The spring pre-load is adjusted with a M5 hex screw on the axle holders.

Showa rear shocks feature 36mm pistons with piggy-back nitrogen charged reservoirs. The compression damping may be adjusted with a knob on top of the reservoir. Rebound is adjusted with a thumb wheel on the lower clevis. Rear spring pre-load is also adjustable.

Nissin® dual front brakes feature 292mm full-floating rotors and four-piston calipers.

Isolation-mounted XL Evolution 1200 cc V-Twin engine with black powdercoat finish features downdraft Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI), high-performance camshafts, precision oil-cooled cylinder heads and a large-capacity oil cooler. Compression ratio is 10:1. The engine is rated at 74 ft. lbs. peak torque @ 4000 rpm (per SAE J1349).

Upswept, high-volume 2-1-2 straight-shot exhaust system with satin black finish offers extra cornering clearance.

Chassis features a high-performance designed tubular mild steel frame. The rigid, cast-aluminum swingarm is engineered to enhance handling.

Dunlop® Qualifier D209 tires were designed specifically for the XR1200X.

Three-spoke lightweight cast-aluminum wheels, 18-inch front / 17-inch rear, are finished in gloss black with an orange pinstripe on the rim.

Wide, black dirt-track handlebar for enhanced steering leverage and comfort.
Rearset foot pegs for additional cornering clearance.

Compact instrument display with white-faced analog tachometer, digital speedometer, dual trip meter and clock.

3.5-gallon fuel tank with aircraft-style aluminum alloy fuel filler.

29.2-inch seat height with standard passenger pillion and foot pegs.

Optional Harley-Davidson® Smart Security System.

nah - the whole tail end of that bike is too "heavy" -- visually unbalanced...

lots of better looking Harleys out there --- i'll take a Nightster, or the Badboy with the springer front-end... but really I want a Mert Lawwill replica dirt-tracker  from the "newer" line-up --- if I ever end up in Harley land...

Exhaust looks all wrong and it just looks cheaply made with a lot of stamped metal, plus the cylinders sticking out on the left just looks weird.

I agree with the comment about the back end, but overall I voted awesome. If I were to pick a HD based purely on looks (including what I would be looking for in fit/position) this would be the one I think. Though it looks a million times better in the first picture than the others. Without that first picture I may have been on the fence!

I voted "cool" because I think Harley is on the right track with this bike - an attempt to bring some "sport" into the Sportster. Rear-set pegs, adjustable suspension on both ends, solo seat, 2-1 exhaust, blacked out paint scheme, etc... it looks the part. But somehow it's missing something, or something just doesn't look right about it. I think it may be that boat-tail arse end, but something is detracting from the overall "wow" factor for me.

Too small, too slow and way too ugly! I'd rather walk! Fail!

I don't like the back either, but I also voted Awesome because the rest of the bike looks good.

Of course there are loads of better looking Harleys. But are there any better handling ones?

Awesome vote for me. It could have a better seat and lose lots of weight, but IMHO these aren't dealbreakers.

I'm voting cool because I think it's a step in the right direction. It's the closest Harley's ever come to a bike I would buy. It's still too heavy (compare to a Triumph Thruxton, for example), and I'm not at all into it's looks. Saw it at the New York show, it kind of stood out like a sore thumb at the Harley display - all high and hunched and bulky looking. But a bike meant more to ride than to look at, so a step in the right direction for HD.

"Unrealised protential"

I voted Uncool.

While I really like the direction Harley-Davidson is going with the XR series (H-D needed something to replace the discontinued Buell motorcycle line) I think the looks and comfort level is just not there yet.

I've sat on many XR's, this one included and when I see it I think it's a cool bike, but then I see the oil cooler sticking out of the frame to the left side and think... WTF, couldn't they have moved that somewhere else? Sitting on it the seat in like a plank and on the gas tank bottom right has an air cooler that digs into the knee thanks to it's sharp angle.

Buell was going in the right direction for Harley-Davidson, Buell was taking the Harley-Davidson enging and doing something with it other than dropping it into a different frame.

Can we not see a Harley-Davidson XR using Buell technology and comfort?

Sorry H-D, I love your bikes, I love this one too (from the right side), front on it looks "awkward" and sitting on it you wonder if any of the designers ever did.
