For those in peril on the sea..... :boat:

Happened to visit the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) UK HQ & training school on Friday. Great facility on Poole Harbour, Dorset.

Although I don't personally engage in watersports, I live on the coast & also enjoy visiting fishing villages all over UK. I have so much admiration for the brave men & women who put to sea sometimes in atrocious conditions to save lives.

The RNLI is a charity & is NOT government funded!!

Got me to wondering what other countries do to fund rescues at sea?

The US has the Coast Guard, which is technically speaking a branch of the military.

We have The Coastguard service in UK too, but the RNLI provides actual rescue services. Obviously thet work in conjunction with each other but I am not sure where the cut off between coastguard & volunteer lifeboat personnel is.

Ah ok, yeah here all of the services of your Coast Guard and all of the rescue services are done by either the Coast Guard or sometimes the National Guard.
