82 xj650 shutting off while riding. help!
while riding, the bike will shut down, electrical stays on but no power to the motor. electric start will not work and tapping the solenoid will not work. after an a hour or so of waiting one or the other methods will usually start her up. also happens at rpms above 6500-7000 sometimes; bike will start sputtering and tach will start bouncing around then it will shut down for an hour.? also sometimes it will only start with the screwdriver to the solenoid, i'm pretty sure that i need a new solenoid but will that solve the shutting down problem. please help!

need to check your wiring ... there may be a problem w/ the solenoid, but you may also have a loose ground on the starting circuit of coming off the battery. However, A solenoid problem shouldn't cause your bike to just die.
the next time this happens, open your fuel tank and see if you hear a vaccuum "Whoosh" of air - if the fuel cap vents are clogged, it could be shutting off fuel to the carbs.
