Idea's for touring within 500 miles of Western Chicago

This will be my first touring summer. I'd like to start out with destinations at or less than 500 miles from west of Chicago. I plan on staying over for the longer runs.

I'm open for either the attraction being the roads traveled or the actual destination. I have to start somewhere. I'd like to avoid Chicago proper.

Inexpensive ideas for a one up within 500 miles (one way) of Western Chicago?

Thanks for your ideas for my 1st tour.

Take a road map and a piece of string measure out 50 mile and draw a circle. Make one for 100 miles, 150 mi, 200 mi. You get the idea.

What I'm looking for are roads to destinations that are not advertised as great bike routes.

So any suggested destinations with roads not to miss on the way there or in the area ?
