1998 Suzuki GSX750F Gearchange Lever

#1 Unread post by Tarzan »

Howdy All,

I'm just starting the repair work on my crash damaged bike and the first (of many) problems I've hit is on the gear change lever.
My Haynes manual says this when it comes to fitting a new gearchange lever:
"If the linkage arm was removed, align the slit in the clamp with the punch mark on the end of the gearchange shaft"

My gearchange shaft doesn't have a punch mark. Does anyone have any tips on getting this back on in the right position (aside from trial and error!).

NB, I am aware that I should have recorded the position of the old gearchange lever before removing it but I forgot!

Thanks in advance for your help.

I think the punch mark is one you are sposed to make yourself before removal. If you remember to make one first. A Sharpie marker also works for this.

I ussually set the shifter by eye to start with, then finetuned the position with the linkage. I start with the shifter level to the ground then start moving the far end down towards the ground untill it feels right.

So trial and error is a legitimate method for me

I'll have to give it a go then. It sounds like it'll be good fun anyway.

Thanks for the response BuzZz, you really are an incredibly helpful all round good egg! Seriously too, it's pretty much guaranteed that you'll offer advice on pretty much any subject asked here.
Cheers for the help.
