Hi all
I am new to the forum and I am a returning motorbike rider. However the problem here in New Zealand is, if you are in the process of gaining a motorbike license you are only permitted to ride any bike under 250cc. Even if you are 6ft 1 and over 200lbs like me. So I have not purchased a bike yet and I am wanting feedback from you all as to what would my best bet would be? I will use it for commuting to work and the odd cruise on the weekend.

What do you favour? Cruiser types, standard types or sport types?

Honda makes a CBR 250 and Kawasaki has the Ninja 250. Both sporty styles.

Honda has a cruiser style Rebel 250 that is ok for highway riding.

You may have more 250cc options in New Zealand than we have here in the US. Of the bikes we have here, if money was no option I'd go for the Honda CBR250R. I'm your size, I've sat on one and it fit me OK. The engine has more low end torque than a Ninja 250.

Of the 250cc cruisers, I think the one from Hyosung has be biggest physical dimensions. Kymco used to make a 250 cruiser with a larger than average frame, but I think it is no longer sold. Personally I can't ride a Honda Rebel or a Suzuki GZ250, they're just too small for me.

I hope you can find a suitable bike for your size, although you are definitely not too big for a 250!

Thanks for your feedback. I used to ride motor cross bikes back in the day and so I am more of a sporty type biker, anyway went down to the bike shop yesterday and had a chat with the guy at the Kawasaki shop the new Ninja looks nice.

How about a dual purpose bike like a Yamaha WR250? It might work well for someone your size...
