Chain slapping

#1 Unread post by vagne »

I have a BMW F650GS with factory fitted lower suspension, and have been told that this noise is caused by the geometry of the singing arm to give a lower seat height, the chain tension is so tight that there is almost no movement , which i am told by BMW is ok but the slapping of the chain agaist the guide can not be eliminated, i think its a latent defect and is very off putting to the point of being very distracting when riding. Has any one got a similar problem , or any comments please.

Hi buddy. First off some chain slap is normal, but not enough to be noticeable. Secondly if your chain is too tight it's not slap you're hearing, it's binding when you're riding over a bump or something. You want movement in the chain! Get the chain adjusted to factory specs, then check your sprockets and chain for unusual wear. On the sprockets, check for any kind of pitting in the front or back of the tooth, on the chain, check for binding.

Hello and welcome to the forums. Any chain should have 8 to 10 mm of slack at the tightest point of it's run.
People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.
