Cancer Cure???
Tell me what you think...
Canadian researchers find a simple cure for cancer, but major rx companies are not interested.
Researchers at the University of Alberta, in Edmonton, Canada have cured cancer last week, yet there is a little ripple in the news or in TV. It is a simple technique using very basic drug. The method employs dichloroacetate, which is currently used to treat metabolic disorders. So, there is no concern of side effects or about their long term effects.
This drug doesn't require a patent, so anyone can employ it widely and cheaply compared to the costly cancer drugs produced by major rx companies.
Canadian scientists tested this dichloroacetate (DCA) on human's cells; it killed lung, breast and brain cancer cells and left the healthy cells alone. It was tested on Rats inflicted with severe tumors; their cells shrank when they were fed with water supplemented with DCA. The drug is widely available and the technique is easy to use, why the major drug companies are not involved? Or the Media interested in this find?
In human bodies there is a natural cancer fighting human cell, the mitochondria, but they need to be triggered to be effective. Scientists used to think that these mitochondria cells were damaged and thus ineffective against cancer. So they used to focus on glycolysis, which is less effective in curing cancer and more wasteful. The drug manufacturers focused on this glycolysis method to fight cancer. This DCA on the other hand doesn't rely on glycolysis instead on mitochondria; it triggers the mitochondria which in turn fights the cancer cells.
The side effect of this is it also reactivates a process called apoptosis. You see, mitochondria contain an all-too-important self-destruct button that can't be pressed in cancer cells. Without it, tumors grow larger as cells refuse to be extinguished. Fully functioning mitochondria, thanks to DCA, can once again die.
With glycolysis turned off, the body produces less lactic acid, so the bad tissue around cancer cells doesn't break down and seed new tumors.
rx companies are not investing in this research because DCA method cannot be patented, without a patent they can't make money, like they are doing now with their AIDS Patent. Since the rx companies won't develop this, the article says other independent laboratories should start producing this drug and do more research to confirm all the above findings and produce drugs. All the groundwork can be done in collaboration with the Universities, who will be glad to assist in such research and can develop an effective drug for curing cancer.
You can access the original research for this cancer here.
This article wants to raise awareness for this study, hope some independent companies and small startup will pick up this idea and produce these drugs, because the big companies won't touch it for a long time.

First question... is this a joke or is it real? I think it's real, but thought I'd ask as it's pretty darn amazing!

Re: Cancer Cure???
A friend posted it, so I don't know...
I guess the key thing is that the date on the article isn't April 1st.

Re: Cancer Cure???
I heard about something like this a few weeks ago on a radio show...the researchers stated that it attacks all cells that reproduce very quickly(not just cancer, but most of the rapid growth cells are viral of some kind)...they break the link just as they are about to split into two and the cells die...I know a couple of people that could have benefited from this research just 18 months ago, but have passed away...I hope this does see the light of day instead of being buried because of the lower profit potential...I'm pretty sure the radio show was the Charles Adler show, sometime in November...if I find a link to the podcast I will post it here for those that are interested...
Later.
Later.

Re: Cancer Cure???
If this true we need it NOW. If you look at MS liberation therapy and how it took the slow road as there were no big profits to be made, it could be quite some time before this option is available to cancer patients. Having our friends daughter about to undergo a second very rigorous round of chemo I would do anything that I could to get her what she needs.
Thanks for the tip Dr_Bar - I will now be spending many hours with google to learn more.

Re: Cancer Cure???
Apparently this break-through occurred back in 2007 and has been tested on 5 advanced brain cancer patients since. Out of the 5, 4 are still living however the results are somewhat inconclusive. FOr an update look here:

The article was very informative, I also liked the link to a National Geo article at the bottom of the piece...

Re: Cancer Cure???
Why cure something when you can just treat the symptoms and make triple the profit of a cure.

Re: Cancer Cure???
If a cure for cancer was released, just think of the instant unemployment spike. No more big money to blow on test tubes and dinners with donors. An incredibly large industry would have nothing to do... There's toomuchat stake to release a cure...

Re: Cancer Cure???
Disclaimer: I am no expert and my knowledge of this is limited to one single semester of nutritional science...
So this drug is supposed to eliminate glycolysis, a perfectly normal and essential function in the human body?
How does glucose get broken down then? What happens to the sequences in the cellular respiration cycle?
I have nothing to contribute here except to ask even more questions.
Where's storiesunfolding? Isn't he a PhD in molecular biology?
