I have well over 8,000 miles on my '04 model with no leaks or issues to speak of. It does "suffer" from the trademark tapping noises, but those are attributed to the eight hydraulic lifters working at idle speed when the oil pump is at its weakest. They increased the displacement in '04 to 1552cc (1600), but nothing else has been done to the original design and the engine has actually been around a lot longer than the Mean Streak (in the form of the 1500 Classic).
It's a helluva good ride! If you're getting a decent deal on the one you're lookin' at and it's in good shape you won't be disappointed!

Tapping in mean streak
I have a mean streak and I have put 4000 kms on this year. Bought it new in late fall of 2005. I have noticed that tapping noise and thought that it was knocking or pinging and am worried that this may damage my baby. any thing that you can tell me would be great.

My 02 M/S has about 22k miles on it with no problems at all except for a fork seal leak, certainly not a production defect. I bought it new in 02.You can see it in the link below.

Hahaha. Good one Moto.MotoF150 wrote:If I was you I would buy a used Honda VTX1800 instead of a Mean Streak
You didn't mention "why". Illuminate us, please.
I bought a used 03 MS just this year. It had almost 7k miles when I purchased it. I logged another 7k so far with the 3 1/2 months I've owned it. I've had no issues at 14k miles. I did recently changed to synthetic and noticed considerable shifting smoothness (Amsoil).
I was also to get considerable performance gains with new exhaust, electronics, and air intake. All I can say is that this bike is really open for upgrades. They stifled the performance to meet emissions, but if you do just 3 things, the bike is an animal! Lots of after market upgrades for it too.
