broken pilot jet

i got an old yamaha sr250 going but it was backfiring through the exhaust when i let the throttle off.i took off the carb to have a look and noticed the pilot jet head is wrecked or broke off inside the tube[if you know what i mean]. i cant get it out.anyone know a trick of how i could get it out without breaking the tube.

Hmmm, that is buggered up pretty good. You could try a small reverse (left hand twist) drill bit. It should bite into the brass pretty easily and twist it out.

Oh yeah, something along the lines of a 1/8th or 1/16th ought to work just fine. It'll drill into the brass a little, make sure it gets a good bite, and quick jerks should pull out your jet.
