1983 honda vt750 missing keys

Just got a 1983 honda vt750 and it has no keys. Im assumin that the wheel lock is electrical so if I bypass the key cylinder and put my own ignition system in that it will disarm the wheel lock. Does anyone know if this will work?

You mean the forklock? Preventing the bars/forks/wheel assembly from turning, I assume.

Nope. That would be mechanical.... a pin or a tab will protrude from the ignition cylinder itself and engage a hole/slot/tab on the frame, holding everything ing place on most bikes. The actual devices may vary slightly, but they all work the same, more or less.

You may be able to call a dealer with the number on thge ignition cylinder and have them find a key with the right pattern. Maybe not, 'specially on a 20+ year old machine. A good locksmith may be able to make you a key from the ingition on the bike, call around and ask. Can't hurt, anyway....

A good locksmith should be able to make you a key, if the dealership can't. Just don't be surprised when he charges you $100 for it.

Disassemble your key lock assembly and look for a set of numbers and alphas . Take that info to your largest Honda dealer and they should be able to make you a set of keys without any problem.

I did that for my yammie. Write down the numbers/alphas on the lock, just to be sure check if its the same on the gas tank and seat lock too!! The dealer willl however ask for proof of ownership or registration and a driver's license.

It cost me about $27 including taxes, i dont thinkn a honda dealership will be much more expensive. A locksmith will charge much more to figure out the tumblers without the keycode. You could take off your gas tank and take it along to the dealer to check if the key works on the spot.

thanks guys, I couldnt find any numbers on the key cylinder

Ill check on the gas tank and helmet lock when I get another free day to get up to the garage. Is there anyway to find the key code with the vin number or anything like that?
