Yamaha V Star 650 won't drop down to idle when hot

Idle Problem: V-Star 650
1. This is a 2008 Yamaha V-Star 650, with carburetors (not injected) with 5,600 miles on it. I checked all the mechanical parts and lubricated the cables. Mechanically everything returns to the idle stop screw when the throttle is released.
2. When the engine gets hot it begins to idle very fast and won’t return to normal idle speed when throttle is returned to fully released position.
3. The problem occurs only after riding for a while and mostly but not always at high speed.
4. This happens regardless whether the motorcycle is on the road or stopped; clutch engaged or not engaged.
5. When the motorcycle slows to a stop the engine light sometimes comes on.
6. The problem resolves when the motorcycle is shifted into neutral.
7. Since the engine returns to normal idle when the transmission is shifted into neutral this appears to be an electrical, rev limiter, or sensor problem.
Can anyone help point me in the right direction to correct this problem?
