tire measurements...?

quick question....what do all the numbers corespond to on the side of a tire? for example it could be something like 220/blah blah blah....is it different for every manufacturer? or is it like, width, diameter and profile or something? little help from anyone who knows would be appreciated

is the width in millimeters? cause i know the diameter is in inches...right? stupid america not catching up with the damn metric system....cant we all just get along?!

Unfourtunatly the cool graphical thing on top doesn't go low enough for bike tires, but if you punch in the tire size in the calc at the bottom, it'll tell you size in inches

120/ 90/ 18
the first number is metric width (divide by 25.4 _ I thinK! to get the inches)
of tire at the widest point
the 2nd number is profile--- 90's are common It is a height number that is
90% of the width of the tire
---if the number was 80 it would be 80% of the width--- as the number goes down the tire gets fatter and lower (like fat tires on cars)
The last number is the rim size of the tire. 16 inches, 18 inches etc
