Gettin' High

So I am heading to the mountains next week on the bike, my '90 FJ-1200. It's jetted pretty close for 2000-2500ft where I ride on the flatlands, a little rich by a blonde one maybe. So when I hit those 6000-7000 foot passes, my CV's are going to compensate, right? Or is my wife gonna be pushing uphill?
I ain't never been to the mountains on a bike before, so it's never come up. I've been there on dirtbikes, and they do need re-jetting, but CV's are gonna cover my azz, right? I wasn't too worried about it, until I got talking with Lana and she got all paranoid about it when I mentioned it. Now she'd got me half paranoid too.....
Tech? Anyone? Someone make me feel better about this...

If it will make you feel any better Dean, I took my old 'zook through Sunwapta pass, which has a higher elevation than any of the other passes in the mountains (on our side of the 49th) and I didn't have any problems, except for a little sluggishness and lack of horsepower. took a bit to get the rpm's up and get any power, but it wasn't a big deal. I was also loaded down for a trip at the time. I think I cleared the top of the pass doing about 80kph. You should have better luck with the FJ, given the larger displacement and better hp output.

I agree w/ Gryph. If it gets really bad, take out your air cleaner and stretch a nylon over the airbox intakes til you get thru the roughest part. You should be fine.

It's their job, because we never do it. Sometimes mine keeps me safe, against my worser judgement.

The CVs won't compensate for the altitude, but you shouldn't notice too much power loss at 6K-7K ft. It'll just be a bit more sluggish on the throttle. At that altitude, your bike will make roughly 25% less power than at sea level. Once you get to 10K-11K ft. passes the power loss is pretty noticable. Crossing some passes in the CO Rockies at those altitudes, my bike has all the performance of a well used Yugo.
Back in the days when everything had a carb, this was pretty normal. Nowadays, most cars and some bikes have electronic fuel injection which will automatically compensate for the thin air by leaning the mixture. They still get a power loss, since there's not as much oxygen up there, but by leaning the air/fuel mixture they make the most of it. Carbed bikes and cars suffer from both a lack of oxygen and a less than optimum mixture.

Thanx guys, that's about what I figured, and now Lana has seen other people(who ain't ME) say the same thing, she's mellowed out about it.
Now the REAL question is.......
Who read the title of this post and thought "Now what is that Idiot talking about?"
