Newbie trying to tie down gear

I'm set to do some tent camps off my bike and I've made a couple of 2-3 night road trips...but I see how easy it is to not tie down your gear good. I've about decided to use only 48" bungie cords. When I was using some shorter bungie cords when the load shifts on the road I saw a chance for a bungie cord to get loose and into my tire or chain....all bad news.
Any thoughts about a good way to tie down gear would be appreciated.

I use cargo nets.

Where possible, do not use bungie cords. Straps are much more reliable and secure, leaving little to no room for a load to "poo poo".

I agree with you....bungie cords will stretch and get weak. I'll work on using the ratchet straps that I use for trailering the bike. These are strong. Maybe just use the bungie straps to position the load before using the big ratchet straps to make it secure.

Same here and my cargo nets have lasted quite a while so far.
Sometimes I'll use a bungee cord for a 1-2 hour trip but IMO they are not that safe (might be caught up in the wheel if they get loose) but with any "hook type product" they can easily scratch your paint/plastic so care has to be taken (I wrap the hook ends in tape).
