Hello!

I've been reading the forums for a week or two, but decided to register today. I don't have a bike or license yet, but I'm hoping to get a permit either this week or next week and then get signed up for the basic riding course before the end of the month.

I doubt I'll be able to get a bike until November or December though, so I am wondering whether it'll be better to wait until warmer months(March-ish) to get one.
(can a person can get a better deal in November/December or some other time??)
I'll probably buy a new one just because I would feel more at ease that way.

I don't have much advice to give right now, so I'll probably still be mostly
lurking, but I'll try to post now and then.(probably with lots of questions)

Smart choice getting signed up for the course. The general view is that used bikes are better for first rides. Most new riders drop their first bike once or twice - usually at very slow speed, or even stopped. It takes a while to learn how to control the weight. It would hurt a lot less to drop an older used bike.

Buying in the winter is a good idea too. Most people aren't looking for bikes then, so sellers tend to accept less since they have fewer interested people.

I ended up hitting a snag today that might delay my plans by several months I'll find out soon if that is going to be the case or not.

I won't mind dropping my bike too much as long as it still runs and I'm ok. I've used all my previous vehicles until they literally stopped moving. I haven't had very good experiences with used items(mostly electronics) so I've stayed away from them for the past several years. I will be getting a brand that's known for reliability.(probably honda) Other than that, I don't have any ideas yet. I figure I need to make sure I pass the tests first.

I bought mine new as a first bike, however I DID drop it twice (at slow speeds). The parts for a brand new bike are expensive. As far as are bikes cheaper during the off season. NO. The best deals you can get (especially on a new bike) would be at the very beginning of the season (at least in California). Hope this helps.

Just about anywhere I've visited, I noticed the prices of bikes are lowest at the end of the season, or mid winter when the bike shows usually happen. Gotta clear that previous year's stock off the showroom floor before they fill up with next year's models...

The bike price is completely dependant upon where you live and if the “off-season” is indeed off. If you have snow etc. then you have an off-season you catch some breaks, some times. But generally speaking the manufacture is not the best place for deals on bikes.
I am relieved to see you are not looking for the latest turbine engine strapped to wheels for your starter bike!
You can always look at time and snags as a boon, you have more time to sit on more bikes and really get comfortable with one or two. It only benefits you.
