can anyone tell me what engine this is (looks to be a later model BMW, but that's all I can tell)
that's not the original frame is it? if it is what did this bike start out as?

You know, it doesn't look a whole lot different from an '88 R100GS Street Fighter...

I swear that bike is in one of the "American Flyers" sections of one of the big U.S. mags. If I remember correctly he raised the R100 engine in the frame for more cornering clearance. I'm sure someone with more ambition than me will go and look it up shortly....

It's just an older BMW airhead boxer engine. There are tons of em out there.
They all look the same (With some variations between intakes and minor details like that over the years) and come in 450, 650, 800, 900, an 1000cc versions.
The later models (like my bike) have squarish modern looking valve covers, but you can get the old style (like those pictured) to give it an older look.

I think BMW was the first to successfully use a shaft drive on bikes-in the 1930's.

LOL yeah, I thought he was just talking about boxers
Rumor has it that the bike replacing the f650 will be a parallel twin running a belt drive ... should be interesting.
