Unique Roads...

I don't know how many locations in Canada, or even the world, where you'd find two roads like these. Two, two way roads, side by side, separated by a narrow strip of grass and some telephone poles.

So, what's so unique about this picture? Well, as blues2cruise and ceemes will attest to, this road is Zero Ave. it extends from the Peace Arch crossing in Surrey BC, to Abbotsford BC approximately 30kms along the Canada-US border. Yes, that narrow strip of grass is the border between Canada and the USA, the bike is in Canada and the other road is in the US. You'll note, no fence, no guards or watch towers, there are hidden cameras and sensors along the right of way, but none that you'd notice. A little further down this road on the US side is a bar called the Smugglers Inn, a 2 foot high post and chain fence is all that keeps us Canadians from parking and going in for a drink.

Any "Unique" roads in your part of the world...

Nice! Does anyone get in trouble for crossing that strip of land? What keeps the Canadians out of the bar? Surely the owner can be a deputized border control officer right?

Wow. All I can think of now is this scene from Canadian bacon.

Hi doc. That's really graphic.

There are a couple of roads that do something strange like that where I live. Never seen it anywhere else until now. The A1001 approaches the A1(M) motorway in central Hertfordshire, nudges up against it and then runs directly alongside it for a mile and a half, separated by a low hedge. When the A1(M) dives into a tunnel, the A1001 continues to keep it company but now runs along directly on top of it at surface level. It's still there when the A1(M) emerges again, but now it's running along on the other side. It doesn't seem to like that because, after about a mile and a half, it does a sharp turn, bridges the motorway, turns again and carries on running in close parallel to it on the original side. That's not quite as neat or as odd as the roads in your pic, but like them, they make you think there's an interesting history there somewhere. You also wonder what went through the planner's minds!

But, of course, we don't really have a problem with borders here. I can still cross into Wales or Scotland without a passport or being stopped by the plod - for now at least.

Huh pretty cool. I'd be the jerk crossing it repeatedly just to screw with border patrol...
