1981 GS1000 Gas Tank leak

Found I have a good leak at the weld flange on lower left side of gas tank, about the size of a soda straw... looking for a good tank or failing that, a name of business that knows how to re-weld these tanks. Corrosion evident along the seam and I doubt those "Sealers" would suffice in this instance. Would like to keep the stock look of factory issued tank, but am open to options. Otherwise, may have to part-out or sell this bike, I suppose. I'm in Pacific Northwest , just north of Seattle close to Vancouver, Canada. Anybody out there with a good name for this kind of repair> thanks, Ron

Hello Ron and welcome to the forum. I've found that some (not all) radiator shops can weld gas tanks. I also advise caution, making sure all gas fumes have been purged from the tank before any welding is done. I've used a guy who runs a custom shop in the Kansas City area, to weld new bungs in a tank for aftermarket petcocks. It wasn't cheap. A better solution may be finding a tank in a motorcycle salvage yard. I know there are several in the Seattle Tacoma area. Just use Google. Good luck and I'd like you to post a picture of your bike when finished.

So, I have noticed several GS850 gas tanks on Ebay , look similar and of same measurements, so wonder if a Tank from an 850 can slide onto my GS1000gx. Ran the Compatibility screener and usually says "Not Compatible", but is that for real? has anyone else come up against this situation? thx, Ron

Good News from local Radiator repair shop.... $60 and they can do a repair of the corrosion along the seam...sigh of relief!
