Uh oh!
Ran into an issue while doing a full check over my first bike that I bought a few days ago... A dead squirrel in the air intake box. The box is full of the usual crap that comes with a rodent nest, and the mesh filter is totally rotted through. The bike has also been started and ridden while this was the case. I was wondering, would it be practical/worth it/possible to simply remove the air intake box and mount two K&N filters onto the throttle body?

Practial-no/worth it-maybe/possible-sure
You may need to change out the exhaust if you go this route.

What would be the pros and cons of going that route? I'm very new to motorcycles, trying to learn as fast as I can.

Re: Uh oh!
If you do that you will definitely need to change the jetting on the carbs. Exhaust can stay the same if you want it to (although I'd recommend getting a better breathing one), but the carbs wouldn't be an option. Usually around 30 bucks if you do it yourself. The new exhaust is going to be hard to find though for a bike of that vintage.
Is the bike stock right now?

Then yeah all of our advice applies. You would need to change quite a bit.

My advice is keep it as stock as possible until you get it running right.
