puckerish moment

#1 Unread post by obfg »

This morning, cool, about 5c, sun just up over the horizon, (blinding if eastbound). I'm going to work, speed about 50km (30mph) approaching a green light. Opposing traffic in left turn lane is waiting for oncoming traffic (me) to clear or for the traffic lights to start flashing so that they have the right of way. I am just about in that grey zone ( do I have space to stop for the yellow light or not) but not quite. Of course it turns yellow and I hit the brakes and the rear end starts sliding out ( hence the title, "PUCKERISH MOMENT" ) Not sure what I did next but think I got off the front brake, regained steerage, and stopped short of the intersection and right side up!!! The cage driver's jaw dropped, witnessing my antics! Probably thought I was going to slide into him ( I was thinking the same thing). However nothing bad happened. Instead of being in a hospital with serious road rash or broken bones or worse, I am sitting in a comfortable chair as write of my experience.

As to the cause of this incident.
1) cold tires on cold pavement requires extra caution.
2) trying to beat a stale green light is, well how can I put this, STUPID !!!

To make matters worse I knew the road and tire conditions before starting out. And I use this route every day and knew the light. STUPID STUPID STUPID.

Well that feels better.

Hey buddy, thanks for sharing your moment. Sounds like you learned a very valuable lesson and did so completely unscathed! Well good for you, you must have some serious skills to be where you are today. Glad you're okay and able to blow steam here to get it out of your system. :)

Good thing you had good reactions to be able to stop and stay upright.

Glad you made it ok.

I agree about the early morning sun when you are travelling east. It's blinding.
