If nothing in the final drive is broken then my first check would be the clutch for sure

Were you cruising down the road in gear or did you operate the clutch when this happened?
Did the lever feel 'different' at the time?

How do you know it's in neutral? Got the neutral light on when the engine is running? Did the neutral light just pop on when you were cruising?

Put it up on the centerstand (it has one?). Engine off.

Using your hand to rotate the rear wheel can you use the shift lever to make something that sounds like gear changes? Can you hear the transmission gears turning?

Can you hear or feel anything else that might be worth describing?
