Much like the movie "Argo" changed history to suit an American audience, so was history for the movie "The Great Escape" changed...
An interesting tidbit of altered history...

Another movie to add to the list the 1998 US WWII film "The Thin Red Line".......anyone with a modicum knowledge knows that term "The Thin Red Line" was coined to denote Wellington's British Infantry, which formed up in two ranks to face and more often then not defeat Napoleons columns of troops. Later in 1812 the Thin Red Line repulsed the Yankee Bluecoat invasion of Canada.
There is a term I've coined and use to describe these revisionist ultra-patriotic US films...MABS.....More America Bull dodo.

Anyone remember U-571?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U-571_(film)
I remember it only because in the movie, the capturing of the Enigma machine was attributed to Americans when it's fairly common knowledge that the Enigma machine was first captured by the British (even before the US got involved in WWII).
Annoyed the hell out of the Brits too, understandably.

Read the book, "A Man Called Intrepid" by William Stevenson. Oddly enough, the story is about a man named William Stephenson, a Canadian that became the head of the British secret service during WWII.
The author passed away last fall...
