is 5000 miles on something like a sv650 or an gs500f/e getting up there in miles? i know higher reving engines burn out sooner than lower reving ones, but how long can you expect a sport/standard engine to last? going to be in the market soon and i just don't want to get taken...

With proper maintenance, they'll last practically forever. A measly 5000 miles is nothing; I do at least double that in a single riding season.

with a reasonable maintainence schedule, Id like to think you could get at least 80000 miles out of the damn things. Some you'll get more (eg honda VFR), some you'll get less.

Back in 1990 I bought a brand new Harley Heritage Softail.
I had it for over 10 years & looked after it, services ever 5000 kilometres.
when I sold it she had over
130,000K on it & was still going strong.
As far as I know....it still is.
HOW'S THAT YOU 'HARLEY KNOCKERS OUT THERE!
You know who you are....

We all know it was really a Honda with Harley badges on it!
On the serious side, any motorcycle should last for quite some time, as long as they're maintained well. It doesn't really matter what brand or bike it is, if you look after them, and take good care, you should be alright.

I was wandering if that is a typo, did you mean 50,000 not 5000, because if you meant 5000 thats barely broke in the engine like someone mentioned, and even at 50,000 is nothing, if bikes would only last that long I dont think they would be in busines,
