Gawd, I wish i could read the script in his photo captions... anyone translate a little Japanese for us?????? puleeeaze...

If I happen upon $50,000 then this is exactly what I'd like to embark upon... going town to town, meeting a schwack of new people, over 5 or 10 years... working as ya go... etc...

i can't believe he used a Valkyrie... a Honda, OK, but a Valkyrie! That shot where he's dumped it in the mud is exactly why i'd want something smaller. but it is pretty low to the ground and looks like he's stuffed alot of luggage on it.

yeah Paul, that's a good technique, using the legs to pick up a beast --- i've seen LOTS OF PEOPLE HAVE TO USE IT --- tee hee! it's a good reference link for people who ride heavy bikes.

I prefer having a light bike which is easier to save when you do lose it AND is easier to pick up. On pavement that technique will work well, but in adverse conditions like that mud our Japanese friend went down it, it can be a bear getting traction, etc... and still when you crash a heavy bike *whump* you are more likely to have another 100lbs land on your leg/ankle/arm etc... *crack*

So my style is to choose only what I need and nothing more (balanced package)... always just enough horsepower, just enough luggage capacity, etc... and with weight each pound saved (in luggage as well) will pay dividends in each days riding. That's what works best for me. That being said, i have pig for a bike right now and it has a torquey engine, comfy seat, etc., but goes against my usual style.

For that guy the Valkyrie obviously worked, but I wonder if one of his captions doesn't say "Next time i'll bring a Vespa scooter instead!"

Perhaps you SHOULD find a Japanese translator so that you can pass that little man all your pearls of wisdom.

I think he's mimicing the antlered beast at the bottom of that page.

That sure looks like one awesome journey - and a lot less support than the guys from "Long Way Round" had, as well!
