Ya know....I have owned a few Harley's over the years & I have come to the conclusion that the BEST ALL ROUND HARLEY....is the Tar Darr!
Road King.
It's not too big & not too small, in fact it's.....Perfect for all sorts of riding styles & conditions!
OK ok it's NOT a sports bike, it's a touring bike, but I reckon it does most things really well.
I have had Sporty's, Superglides, Lowriders, Softails & Ultra Classics & the Road King Wins.
It has a quick release windscreen, Air suspension & is all round comfy.
Mine has a 1550 kit & the usual upgrades & it's ACE!
I especially LOVE the Torque that baby gives me on demand....& it Looks Cool as well.

Very nice bike, but I'm partial to my Geezer-Glide...

Yeah....the Next Step Up.
Slightly better comfort wise, with the Bat Wing Fairing like on my Ultra.
NO quick release on that screen though.
I like the Road Kings Q/R Screen, Naked in 3 seconds!

It really depends on your definition of "best", doesn't it?

Of course.
However....it's taken 25 years riding & owning lots of Harley's over thousands of miles/kays during many hours on the road to come to my conclusion....which is....the Road King is the 'BEST ALL ROUND' Model not the 'BEST' Harley. (IMHO)

My wifes cousin has an 03 road king and she loves it. She traded in an 03 sporty 1200C for it. Definately a touring bike. Certainly not small by any means.

How is that engine in the Sportster 1200? Is the Sportster the only HD that is offered with that 1200 cc engine?

Yes, the only one, although most Buells also have 1200+/-.
I love the Sportster, but if I had done it a month later I might have gotten the new Buell Ulysses.
I took the 1200c for 1500+ miles this weekend. It wasn't a lazyboy on wheels, but it was fine. I was moving 80mph most of the time. Not wobbly nor squirrely at all. Even with the high crooswinds on the way back.
It is bone stock and has more power than I need. When I want more, I'll do the stage 1 mods. (In 4 or more years I would guess.)
I rode 100+ miles of intense mountain twisties in Ft.Collins, CO during the trip and kept up with my brother on his KLR and my brother-in-law on his SV650, just fine. And, I had more power, even at 10,000 feet.

That's why I was asking about the 1200 cc motor because I have been drooling over the Ulysses.
