Price of gas?

It seems directly after the Bush's signing of the "new energy policy" the price of a gallon of gas shot up 40 cents. I'm paying around $2.50 now. Thats more than a 25% increase since April. Sure, thats cheap compared to other parts of the nation, but as a student who commutes it raises concerns.
We consume such a vast amount of oil that we get it dirt cheap in the US compared to Europe (we'll be there altogether too soon folks). Besides the high demand- speculators have driven the price of a BBL of oil to an all time high and will drive it higher as long as we consume ever increasing amounts of gas in our ridiculously fancy high-powered expensive vehicles. This is not the Arabs' fault. They're pumping the oil as fast as they can. $$
The largest economy in the world is going to see a real setback when prices rise and the "discretionary" income for things like widescreen tv's ends up in the gas tanks of our SUV's. Just going to the grocery store will open your eyes. I predict a 25% increase in products since just about everything is moved by truck these days. Thats real inflation.
As usual nothing will be done until the shakers and movers get nervous; then the first wrong thing will be implemented since greed will still hold sway...
