Tough call on this topic, there are so many. So With that said, I'll pick 3 of my top ten in order of date of manufacture...
1:
1939 Brough Superior 680
2:
1947 Sunbeam S7 Shaft drive
3:
1970 BSA A65Lightning

I must say, the Honda was head and shoulders above the others..

Choices seem to be based on which generation we belong to. Hate to date myself, but here are my choices.
1970s 750 Norton Commando (with their legendary British handling)
1974 BMW R90S (defined the sport tourer)
1973 Triumph Bonneville (Triumph line defined what a motorcycle should look like)
Love those 70's bikes.
Two out of three ain't bad, but I sure wish I had the Norton. Back in the day, I remember when Norton went belly up. Paulson's in Tacoma must have got a shipment of the bikes and was selling them at a two for one price. They were brand new, in the crate, and had to be picked up by the purchaser. A once in a lifetime opportunity that I did not take advantage of. I'm still kicking myself.

I'm a '70's kinda guy and really like the bikes I grew up with, but I still love the oldtimers too...

I like the oldies, too, but the thing I don't like is what I don't like about my '83--weak electrics. It only has a 250 watt capability, which pretty much rules out any electric clothing or other electrical goodies.
