What do you think of this plan for a new windshield

#1 Unread post by beerbaron »

Hi there, I repaired windshiels and it didn't last long once putted on the motorcycle, the cracks came out again. Not catastrophic but not great as I like it.

Instead of buying a new one I was thinking of cloning the one I already have. Here is my plan tell me what you think of it.

1st Make a mold of the succrent windshield with plaster of Paris.

2nd Take some 1/8" fiberglass heat it at 210 degrees F. For a few minutes to let the moisture go away (makes buble if not).

3rd Heat it at 270 (flashpoint of fiberglass) over the mold.

4th Get it out of the oven, aply some pressure at various points for the fiberblass to take form

5th Let it cool down

This will be a winter project, I'm kind of a mad scientist sometimes :) . Tell me what you think of this project.

I don't know about the fiberglass.

Try this. It worked great for me.

Head down to Home depot (or similar place) pick up some Mylar (Like Plexiglass) of the appropriate thickness. set it out in the sun on top of a black rug or blanket and leave it for an hour or so. Then bend and tie it into the curve that you want. Go twice the bend that you want to retain. While it is still hot, run it over to a garden hose and run cold water on it to "set: it into the curved position.

Should be ready to transfer the shape from the original now. Cut as required, drill holes where required and install. You will need to be more careful when cleaning this windshield than with the original as it scratches more easily. Be sure never to wipe it with a dry cloth. It should give you good service and if it ever gets too badly scratched, well you already know how to make the next one.
