#Spanish second row for Smith
Kyle Smith will start tomorrow’s 10th round World Supersport championship race from the second row of the grid after setting the fifth fastest time in this afternoon’s qualifying session at Jerez in Spain.
The Pata Honda rider has been concentrating on getting his Honda CBR600RR to perform on used tyres and he was able to lap the 4.423km circuit in a time of 1m44.155s, missing out by just 0.04s on a front row start for tomorrow’s 19-lap race.
Pole position was set by series leader Kenan Sofuoglu, followed by Lorenzo Zanetti from Italy with American Patrick ‘PJ’ Jacobsen rounding out the front row on another Honda CBR600RR.
Kyle Smith - P5
We’ve had a pretty positive day, really, but I need a couple of tenths. I need them in race pace and I need them for a fast lap because we’re really close. It’s a bit frustrating because the bike feels pretty good. We’ve been doing a lot of work with tyres to see which will be best for the race tomorrow. I’m happy with the way the results have gone but you always want a little bit more – especially as I class this as a home round. I’d love to be on that front row but I’m missing it by that little bit. Raceday is raceday though and that’s the important one; the pace seems like it’s decent so I’ll just have to put up a good fight.

We missed the front row by a few hundredths, so we’re pretty happy with that and race pace is looking not too bad. We still have some front end problems which are hard to improve – they may be down to the grip levels available in the hotter conditions but fifth on the grid is OK. We know Kyle’s starts are pretty good so he’s in for a fight tomorrow!
