W.H.O. reports on the safety of sunbeds...

My suspicions are true. And all I can say is, I told you so. I've been saying this for years and years.............

Artificial tanning sunbeds: risk and guidance

Sunbeds emit UVA and UVB radiation. In general, sunbeds predominantly emit UVA radiation, which is thought to be the least damaging of the UV radiation spectrum. However in recent years, sunbeds have been manufactured that produce higher levels of UVB to mimic the solar spectrum and speed the tanning process.

Overexposure to UV radiation from the sun and artificial sources is of considerable public health concern. UV radiation plays an important role in the development of skin cancer, cataracts, and other eye conditions, and suppresses the immune system. Cumulative UV radiation also results in premature skin ageing.

While WHO does not recommend the use of UV tanning devices for cosmetic purposes, it is recognized that sunbeds continue to be available to the public.

This practical guide, prepared by Craig Sinclair, WHO, is intended for government health authorities, to assist them in the development of public health policy in relation to sunbeds.

Hey-ya,

Sorry for being evasive...

A sunbed is that silly thing that people use to get fake tans at places like Fabutan. AKA: Fake 'n bake.

It's a bed with fluorescent-type tube lights that emit UVA & UVB to give you a tan. The bed encloses your whole body, and typically you are stripped to the skivvies.

I have NEVER used one, so I am probably not the best one to be explaining this... LOL

Any dermatologist worth his nitrogen will tell you sunbeds are a menace, at least as dangerous as the sun. I have little spots taken off my face and body every year as a result of spending too much time in the sun as a child and young adult. Don't be a dummy, use plenty of sunblock. Of course, I know most won't, so you can do what I do when you get a bit older......

Always loved the term "Fake n' Bake".... hahaha.

I think it's crazy giving yourself a fake tan. Maybe the drug industry will step in and offer a "skin pigment colour change pill"... then we will be all set!! .... except for the potential side effects, but then we have other pills and meds to take care of those right?....
