Stalling problem

Hi
I have a 2001 suzuki intruder 1400 vs, starts and runs fine, however at slow roundabout speeds, or when idling, or when going over speed bumps the bike will stall.
When it cuts out over a speed bump you also get a very loud backfire!
I have had a look around the carbs etc, the only thing that i really noticed was that both carbs have an outlet at the bottom which both look like vacuum outlets, but neither have vacuum hoses attatched. Shoud they have pipes atatched? I have tried to google it and also to see a haynes manual but not having much luck.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance
