Okay, my bike is 30 years old and air filters can be hard to find and expensive once you find 'em (admittedly, I may just be incredibly tightfisted). Blowing the grit out only gets you so far, so I'm wondering, if modern replacement air filters are made of foam, why can't I just buy foam and make my own air filters in the right shape?
Anyone know what kind of foam would be good for such an undertaking?
Yeah, I know, there'll probably be some rubber bits required to connect this foam contraption, but I'll scavenge those when I get there.
BTW, the bike I want to do this with is a 74 cb360 with paper filters, and I have no idea how to calculate the airflow intake or anything, but I'm hoping it's not that sensitive. Newer bikes could be a problem, I suppose, but I digress.
Any ideas?

I've not done a DIY air filter, but here are the directions that Dan uses:
"If you have an old bike and can't find an air filter for it, you can often make a copy of the original with air filter foam sheets (12"x16"x5/8"), like the one I've been cutting on to the left. Uni sells them, and the price, about $15.00, isn't bad at all. I cut out the foam pieces I want and glue them together with hot glue and a Hot glue gun. Just remember to oil them, like all foam filters."

I've tried looking for this air filter material but couldn't find it.
Good for you for keeping your CB360 running. Old biddies need more care but they'll still get you home.

Thanks TorontoBoy,
Just to update, I haven't done any more work on this front, but I think the foam sheets referenced above are available here: http://www.unifilter.com/accessory-catalog.htm
If anyone else has done this, let me know.
Otherwise, as my schedule permits, I'll be doin' some experimenting, and let you know what I find out here, in case there are other cheap bastards like me out there.
And when in Toronto, drink Henry of Pellham wine (an old friend of mine makes it).
Cheers.
