Losers = Bike Posers

#1 Unread post by TechTMW »

I just got done reading Hunter S Thompson's book Hell's Angels - A Strange and Terrible Saga. I thought that alot of the book is still very pertinent to modern day. I especially liked this quote -

"There is an important difference between the words "loser" and "outlaw." One is passive and the other is active, and the main reasons the Angels are such good copy is that they are acting out the day-dreams of millions of losers who don't wear any defiant insignia or don't know how to be outlaws."

Even though the "outlaw" biker image has been so glamorized today that people feel comfortable wearing insignia or colors, I think the concept is still there. All these losers, who now have the means to go out and buy these hopped-up choppers ... transport them on the back of a trailer for any distance and cruise around on them for show.

Still trying to live out the same fantasies, except now they're spending tens of thousands of dollars to try to get a taste of something they'll never really understand - Instead of just passively reading out their fantasies in newspapers.

Still losers, I guess.

P.S. I'd really like to build an old school bobber one of these days ...

Posers? Yes.

Losers? that would depend on the individual.

whatever floats your boat... I'm not into it, but if it makes someone happy and their not bothering me, it's all good.

I thought you were talking about me.
What do you consider a "poser?"

I wear black leather, have a big beard and ride a cruiser.
I'm not affiliated in any way.

I also ride 70- 100 miles a day, rain or shine.

My Uncle has hair to his waist and a big beard, wears black leather and runs with a very tough group of outlaws. A biker was shot a few months ago in Philadelphia and he was one of the first people questioned.

He doesn't own a Motorcycle, can't ride one because he lost his leg in a car accident.

Which one of us is posing?

I think we're all poser to some degree.

I ride a bike that I am making into a cafe racer. Do I race? no. I just think it looks cool, and it's a blast to ride.

Then there are the guys on big chrome laden cruisers. Trying to look tough and macho?

And the guys riding racing bikes on the street. Trying to be daring risk takers?

Am I a poser?

I used to ride my bike 20 miles to and from work every day. Rain or shine. The Beast was my prefered means of transportation unless I was sick. Never did I ride the bike to impress anyone. In fact my Wing sat on the back lot underneith the gazebo overhang. Pratically invisible unless you smoked.

On the ride home I usually took the long way which was a 2 lane twisty road that no one uses anymore since the main 4 lane road opened. After I made it home 5 minutes after the guys in there shiny new cars I was alreay relaxed and ready to interact with my family.

So where does that put someone like me? Never do I feel a need to belong, a need to rebel. It is just enough for me to enjoy my life and my family.
