I just signed up for the MSF course next Tuesday. I was reading the eBook recommeded on the sticky thread above and it said you need to have your learners permit before taking the course. Is this true? That does not make sense to me.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, you need to have a learners permit in hand by the first riding session. In Pennsylvania, if you pass the MSF, the instructor signs off on your permit and you are then a licensed operator.

in washington a learners permit is not necessary for the MSF. after completing the course, if you pass, you get a certificate that allows you to get your endorsment.

Here in BC you need your learners before the first class. Part of the classes included going on the road so you need a learners to be legal.

Hey kmd.... you might want to mention what state or province (or country?) you are in.

For the Alberta course, the handout I received said we had to have a current Alberta driver's licnese.

In Maryland you do not need a learners permit.

Sounds pretty confusing, doesn't it.

Just took the MSF, and passed  , here in Southern Indiana.
I was mistaken in my original thoughts, but here's how the instructor said the process works here:
You do NOT have to have your permit to take the MSF. If you do not have one, and pass, you need to go to the License Branch, take their written test to get your permit, then you're allowed to ride during the day/no passengers/must have helmet. Once 30 days are up, you go back to the License Branch, show them your permit and your card you received from the MSF class, and your driver's license (they take all three) and get a new license, one with a little "M" under the "Endorsements" area.
What I did, since it was recommended by a couple of friends, was went ahead and got my permit a little over a month before my class. I didn't have a bike, so I couldn't ride or practice, but it was nice to still have that out of the way.
That way, when I passed the class (since it was over 30 days after I got my permit), I could go the next day and get my endorsement. Still don't have a bike, but at least I'm endorsed!
