In the off-road world, an enduro is more of an exersize than a race.

They lay out a measured course through as much nasty terrain as they can. They make out a routesheet with all the turns maked out with milage listed for every direction change. There are serveral checkpionts set up along the route. The idea is to travel the course at an exact speed(ussually 24 mph), the checkpionts are there to make sure you do. If your are late at a check, your docked pionts depending on how many minutes your late. If your early at a check by any amount, your nailed for maximum pionts and basically disqualified.

You will need a timekeeping device on your bike and a routechart holder to scroll through the routesheet while riding. Most organizations also require the bike to have a headlight and tailight too.

I never liked enduros much, myself. I just hate the thought of a race you can lose by going too fast, though in reality, most enduros are set up so it is near impossible to maintain a 24 mph average.
