After reading the FOR BEGINNER RIDERS STICKY, i feel heart broken almost... i had my eyes set on this BEAUTIFULL 2000 SUZUKI GSX-R600, w/ just about everything custom on it, paint, exhaust, swing arm, lowered, ect. ect. but now i that i am heart broken i feel better b/c on monday i was going to buy the bike when i got back in town, (at my in-laws house woo-hooo!) anyway. now i have to start all over and find another bike that fits me...as the NOVICE RIDER. after thinking about what i had just read i had realized i had never once rode a bike not even as a passenger. so instead of being STUPID and buying the bike come monday, i will go on my search agian and find something a little more MY TYPE as the novice rider, something like a 250 maybe a 500 but right now i'm thinking thats even a little too much power. so if you have any other suggestions please let me know.

Give yourself some credit, too. You overcame pride, and temptation, in favor of common sense...and you did it by being open to the wisdom of others. There are many ways to skin this cat, and you have chosen the one that fits you best...congratulations! Ride safe.

I suspect you have a long and fun motorbike career ahead of you.

If you have a friend or co-worker who rides twist their arm to take you out. Most people I know will take pretty much anything as an excuse to ride, and are delighted to help get people into Bikes.

If you can take the MSF or Riders edge course as I understand they have a number of Bikes in the 250-500cc range to try out.

And before I forget, welcome!

Probably a good decision. Some folks get real fast bikes as a first bike and make it home alive. But quite a few others get hurt on their first ride and never ride again. My personal thoughts are that you are proceeding properly. Learn to ride on something a bit tamer and then go get the race bike after you've developed some basic skills. Good luck!

It's nice to see someone take the advise of those more experienced. The Ninja 500/250 or the Suzuki gs500 would make a good starter bike if you're into the sport bike look. Try to find a nice used one, ride it for a couple years and than get your 600. You'll be a much better rider for it.

hey i'm just glad that there are people out there that do care about their "fellow biker/rider". i mean i told the wife about my what i have learned today and she is extremely glad that i'm not buying that BAD @$$ POWER HOUSE OF A BIKE. (well to me it is b/c i've never road on one before.) anyways, are the KEVLAR JEANS worth the Price? where would the best place to buy a used bike from, Private seller or dealer? i mean i got the money to pay for it but since me and the wife are newly wed's we need to build our credit before i start paying cash for this and that. anyways Thanks guys.

eBay, or local want advertising should do the trick for the used bike. Or jus driving around you might see one. And those GSX-R 600's ARE bass power houses. The thing is, there are bigger bad "O Ring" power houses out there

. Just what ever you get, be careful and really learn to ride well. Then to most cars you'll seem like a bad "O Ring" powerhouse when you're blowing them away in twisties/highway, etc. (psst, not condoning street racing or anything, just pointing out the obvious

I assume what you meant by the last statement is you want to finance the bike to establish a credit history. If that is the case, dont finance a bike you will outgrow in a month or two. People give good advice around here for sure, but you need to insert your own judgement in there too, since you are the one spending the money.

Ill be the less conservative view for this thread. I can totally agree that supersports and race replicas can be a handful. Yet, that doesnt mean some 600cc bikes are out of the question. The SV650 is a bike highly recommended to new riders and will have something to teach you for a year or two. Sure, if you act irresponsible on it you can get hurt, but thats going to apply to any cycle. If you take the MSF course first, I can think of no reason why you couldnt get an SV650.

My only point is that if you finance a 250 or even a 500, you will likely regret it in 2 months. If I were you, Id buy a used bike with cash to avoid this problem. If you pay with cash, people of small statue can get a 250. If you are larger a 500 will be fine. BUT if you need to finance, dont lock yourself into a long-term deal that you will in all likelyhood outgrow far before the term ends.
