DO any of you guys have engine guards installed? I am a new rider and everyone says I will eventually drop my bike so would this be a good investment? Do they work well? I have a yamaha vstar 650..should i get the one yamaha sells or aftermarket?

I don't know what the Yamaha one's look like . If they are as nice as some of the after market ones and cost less than I would go with them . Otherwise I would go with the ones that are the most cost effective .
I , too , am considering some guards for my scoot . Even though my spousette keeps telling me they are fugly ..........

Definitely worth every cent if you go down or even just drop the bike. They won't save the mirrors but they sure save the shifter and pegs as well as the engine case.
I knew a guy that dropped his Honda. He waited for a new side case for his engine for four weeks. It had to come from Japan. He installed it and went in the house to wash his hands. While he worked on the bike he had tied his dog on the leash beside him. Somehow the dog managed to get tangled around the bike and panicked. Wanna guess what happened?
He had to wait another four weeks. All this in the middle of the riding season and in Alberta (where it happened) the riding season is not all that long.

Guards are one of those things that, to me, are very practical; but too ugly to look at. Can't stand them to the point that I'll risk it.

I put a small set of engine guards on. They are standard Yamaha ones. I'm not crazy about the look of those big engine guards and I got tired of being told I should have them, so I just put on a small set.
The small ones actually look ok. They won't protect me or the mirrors, but they will probably prevent the cooling fins from getting crushed.

Ugly as sin! But, peace of mind might rule the day.
I had them on my KZ900 back in the day (new rider then, that bike took a beating and kept on!) but I refuse to place them on my LTD.

I actually like the look of my guards on my alpha, but I hate the fact that it limits my cornering clearance.... scrape those puppies almost every time I go out...Im tempted to take them off, but I would hate to waste the money.

Saved my stuff a couple of times. Never wrecks, just drops when moving it while not running...... moving a bike with a broken foot doesn't end well usually.

Mine are functional without being too "fugly". Shop around and see what you can find.
