is there a website or something where I can plug in a motorcycle vin number and find out what kind of bike it is? Carfax only lists make and year... I already knew that.
like, can you tell me what this is?

well if I had stolen it I'd have more info on it... I'm looking at auction listngs and they don't give model numbers, just vin, year and make

1SB5 indicates that it's a 996.

yes! that's what I was looking for... it's a 99 996 biposto (I called a dealer today and asked them)
so do you know where in that vin the it says biposto or what that combination would be for a 748 monoposto?
I got to the point where I can often tell a car by the vin (imports at least, all you really have to do is watch a little initialD) I thought bikes would be easier because the name formula is so much more clinical, I guess I was wrong.

1SB3(R) is a 748 ...
The Vin only indicates engine type and what kind of bike it is ... i'm thinking the dealer determined mono or bi based on the last 6 digits (The bike's unique number)
If you find a Bi for good money, you can always convert it to a mono, but it seems like there are more monos out there anyway.
