...does it really matter if they match or not? Is it only for the purist, who wants a 100% original bike?

- So why do some people enquire over a sale - "Do the numbers match"?

Generally they are referencing the numbers on the bike to the numbers on the paper work .

Many times when someone asks if the numbers match, they are talking about a comparison of the frame and engine numbers. No, they're not supposed to be the same, but they want to see the engine number and frame number are from the same year.

I'm glad someone asked this. I figured someone just swapped out the engine in my bike with a differnent one when I realised the numbers didn't match. Now I know better. :D

How would one go about using the number to learn anything, such as date made and such?

The engine and frame numbers off of our Beetle were sent off to VW main office a while before it came into our possession.

VW replied with the exact date that she rolled of off the production line. I'm sure I've conversations with people saying they have gotten the date of manufacture for their Bike.
