Katana progress

#1 Unread post by Skier »

I've decided to be quite the tenacious punk in getting my Katana up to snuff.
Here's what I currently have:

Prestone DOT 4 synthetic brake fluid
Speed bleeders
Rebuilt and jet kitted carbs
New OEM rear indicators

Here's what's on the way:

Galfer 2-line stainless steel brake line kit
Caliper piston seals
EBC HH brake pads
Front master cylinder rebuild kit
Front fork seal and wiper kit
Front fork slider bushings
Carb boot o-rings (to fix my vacuum leak)
Oil temp gauge

So after that, I'll have my front suspension up to snuff, brakes at "three wheel stoppies" grabbiness (according to a couple guys on a Katana forum I read), a properly running engine and I should be ready for tuning and paint.

Nice choice. Gonna get a set for mine this spring.

Had 'em on my NightHawk. Excellent feel, great stopping power!

I mean, no way, it will do three wheel stoppies. It's gonna brake that well. :)

(edit) As for pictures, well, just imagine all the money fleeing my wallet and bank account like Satan himself is after those little bills.

Parts should be in on Thursday. Too bad school has me bent over a barrel for the next two weeks.

I know the feeling. I just wrapped-up my last two classes and I graduate this Sunday. I'm so used to being pounded with homework every night I'm not sure what to do with myself now!

Parts arrived the other day. All kinds of very, very pricey small parts and no time to put them on. *sigh*

My foe for the evening:

Image

Off with the lever:
Image

If you look carefully at the foreground, you'll notice the brake switch being removed:
Image

The evil punk circlip:
Image

Mini screwdrivers win this round, so out with the old:
Image

And hurridly throw everything back in after soaking with brake fluid:
Image

Quick round of bleeding and she's working almost like new. I think there are some chunks of crud in one of the passages from the fluid reservoir, but nothing that could be a problem. Eventually, though, I'm going to pick up an SV650 front MC.

Next project: take care of those pesky leaky carb boots:

:( Stupid crack and stupid camera not focusing on what I want.

Nice and clean:
Image

Give up on the busted up old screws and go for shiny:
Image

Not going to have another problem removing these F-ers:
Image

And I'm spent:
Image

I sure hope it all works correctly, now.

Onto the brakes!

Left front caliper:
Image

This is clean, right?
Image

Behold the mighty stuck pistons:
Image

Image

Even worse!
Image

After cleaning it all up, putting in new seals, really clean pistons and EBC HH pads:
Image

Ready to rock with speedbleeders installed:
Image

Oh, and one more thing:
Image

:D

I need to pick up some more crush washers for the brake lines to caliper fittings and I'll be ready to rock with the brakes.

Looks like you're using a 3 megapixel camera there. Even for fine details hold it at least 2 feet from the object and you won't have to worry about it going fuzzy. A simply photoediting program will allow you to crop to the important bits. And since 3 megapixels is aprox 8.5" by 11" it should be fine ;)
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
