Hi all,

Now I defnitely know what bike I want (Kawasaki Ninja 650r). However, I am considering buying something smaller, just to practice on it, and selling it a few months later. I have read the recommendation to start on a used bike. Financially, that makes sense. However, I am concerned that a used bike might be broken in unknown ways. A broken car might leave you stranded. A broken bike will probably leave you dead. What can I do make sure that a used bike is in a good shape?

Secondly, how easy is it to sell a 250/500cc bike?

BTW, what do you think about used car/motorcycle sales online? I personally do not understand how you can buy a used vehicle without even seeing it in person. Online is fine for new stuff, but with used you never know what you're gonna get.

Not sure where you are located, but craigs list online is a great place for bikes, I and 2 of my friends have bought bikes from those found on this site and some excelent deals can be found. You also have the opportunity to go check it out. My friend even had a seller meet him at a local bike shop so they could do a checkup prior to sale.

The general recomendation is a Universal Japanese Motorcycle. They dont tend to be very impressive to look at but they are somewhat hard to kill or seriously damage, frging enough to learn on and - oh yeah - CHEAP! Chep to buy, cheap to insure and cheap(ish) to source parts for.

I've bought several Bikes online. With the exception of Jules Trike they were all bought in anticipation of them being basketcases, so far I have been pleasantly surprised.

For your first ride you really want something that will give you no trouble so its worth taking a Friend who works on bikes to check it out before you lay your cash out or dragging the Bike to a independant mechanic for n inspection. Genuine sellers shouldnt have a problem with this.

Lastly, there alwys seem to be more learner's than there are learner bikes so if you keep the rubber down and the mechanics in good condition someone will want her off of you when you go get your Ninja.

Bringing the bike to an independent mechanic is a very good idea. Can anyone recommend a good mechanic in LA? Ideally in Burbank/North Hollywood area. I'm planning to buy the bike after I move to LA, in january.
