Hi. I just inherited a 75 xs750se from my father in law, and I love it. It rides nice, but it takes a while to actually warm up, it stalls out a lot during this warm up with the choke on, but once it is warm, it doesnt stall usually. It does run nicely, but after about 20 or 30 miles, I can smell oil burining, and it smokes a bit every now and then, but not always which is a bit weird. I have changed the oil and filter, but same thing. I am wondering what I should check, or if there is a checklist of sorts to see what can be wrong, or what should be done anyway just to make sure it continues to ride well.

Is it smoking out the tailpipe or somewhere else?

When does the smoke show up? (What do you have to do to make it appear)

Does it stall because it's rich or lean?

it comes out the pipe, there is a slight leak where the pipes connect, but its tiny. There is really nothing that I do to make it smoke, but when I stop I can usually smell it, and when people ride behind me, they usually like to get in front of me because of it. It stalls more because of leanness I believe, seems that when I hold the throttle down, it will run, but its always rough for about 5 minutes, where I cant even almost think of riding it yet, it isnt consistant. After it warms up, it runs smooth

When you choke a bike, what you are doing is adding more fuel to your air/fuel mix. If you must open the throttle to allow more air in to keep the bike going, the you might be a little rich w/ the choke ... maybe the cable's adjusted too tight - or someone put in bigger idle jets - ?

Are you sure the oil is coming from Inside the pipe - and not just an oil drip from the engine that is burning off on the hot pipe? It doesn't sound like a major problem from your description. Are you noticing a tangible drop in your oil level?
