I passed my MSF course last weekend, and am looking at getting a dirt bike to play around on during the winter, and buying a street bike in the spring. My question is, would it be okay to get a sv650s or similar sized bike, or should I still be looking to get a suzuki gs500? Thanks for any responses.

You already know it's a grey area bike, so you will get some that say yes and some that say no. It's your call and only you know your abilities after taking the MSF.

With some practice on the dirtbike over the winter I dont see why it would be a problem if you have your head on straight?

Personally I hate the damn things, so I say no.
edit: by things I mean the Suzuki SV650

Stick with cars. They're a lot safer and have a built-in helmet.

Some day it will be mandated to wear a helmet while driving a car.

Hate is a very strong word Why?

Because it doesn't fit me in any way shape or form. The ergo's are all wrong, so I hate the idea of even sitting on one, let alone riding it.
But I do realize it's different for other people.

While we're on the topic of SV650S .. would 5'10-5'11 around 170lbs (muscle!) be to small for one?

not at all. the SV is not really a small bike in frame size per se. Its not like riding a 250 or 500. its pretty close in size to a 600 sportbike, maybe a little bigger.
