I lost my ignition key the other day. The little bugger always liked to fall off my caribeaner and im guessing it fell off when I was on a hayride... so its pretty much gone for good.
So I need a way to start the bike and I'm at college right now so I don't have the time/resources to mess with taking out the ignition or whatever. Is there an easy way without much work, any theives? heh.
It's a 1982 Yamaha Maxim XJ550

Could you elaborate a little? Hit the screwdriver into the lock or hit it sideways to force it to turn?

well you COULD do that if you wanted your ignition to never work again..... OR you could call a locksmith.

Do none of the above.........
Take your ignition switch out and there are numbers on it . Take it to your Yamaha dealer and give them the numbers and they should be able to cut you a new key . Not that hard or time consuming .

Is it hard to hotwire these bikes?

Why I didn't elaborate.

I would take Wizzards advice. Find the #s on the cylinder and get a new key cut. Cheapest solution.
Stuck on will quickly drain your battery since that means your light is on all the time too as is your ignition system

Could take up lockpicking.
Just a matter of jiggling a few pins here and there and voila.

of course not. Why would any of us ever attempt to be theieves. Not like any of us have tried hotwire/steal a friends car while he was on a date and replace with same model and color so he looks dumb in front of girls. . . oh wait.
Ya just get a new key, i could tell ya how to hotwire it, (assuming its the same kind of igniton as car) and what not, but its a hassle and can damage your ignition if your not super careful, not to mention give you a zap if you grab the wrong wire :-p
