Insurance

Just bought a bike from a friend, registered until april 2006. Do I get in trouble if I ride it without insurance? I know to get insurance quick but do I have to get insurance asap before I touch the thing or what.

Depends on the state. Some require insurance, some don't.
I know in TX it's 25k/50k/15k (or somewhere around that, I always mix up the individual numbers).
Some states don't require it, some do. If your state does require it, and you get in a wreck, then you're in trouble.
But usually they can't tell if you have insurance or not. I've never heard of a cop pulling someone over for a random insurance check.

I live in CA and I think its mandatory, I'm not sure.

If you now own the motorcycle, the title needs to be transferred to you asap. As a seller, even if I were selling to a friend, there is no way I'd NOT do the transfer thing... stuff just happens that you never expect.
Riding without insurance is stupid. . . if you should hit someone then any damage you do will be out of your pocket, and you are then just setting yourself to get sued right into the street.

I'm buying this bike from a known friend and former police officer and current fire-fighter, he told me he will sign off on the paperless title transfering it to me then I take the transfer of ownership to DMV and give it to them and DMV sends the pink slip straight to me. Thats all right and good, right?

I don't know about CA, but in NC you must provide the DMV with proof of insurance (liability is mandatory) before you can register a vehicle.
Getting the title and registering it are two different things. When I bought my bike, the seller signed the title over to me, I took it to the DMV, paid the fees and they mailed a new title in my name. However, I didn't register it until a couple months after (because I wasn't ready to ride it). I then went back to the DMV, provided proof of insurance, paid more fees, and got my license plate and registration card.
