I'm not happy about my helmet.

On measuring my lovely nut, it was 58cm. I tried a medium, which seemed a little small. So I got a large, for 59-60cm.

I've just been sat wearing it for a little while, and its tight across my forehead.. uncomfortably so, leaving a red mark, and numb skin.

Its not too big overall - passes the roll off test and the skin shift test. What I don't get is how can it be too small, when I measure on the very bit of my head which is too tight a fit?? i.e. I measure 58cm where the helmet is supposed to size 59-60.

I understand there is meant to be a bit of 'settling in' with the padding, but is this too tight? How tight is too tight? Should i not notice it is there (almost)? Have I just got a bizarrely shaped head?

It's shaped wrong for your head. What brand is it? If I recall correctly Shoei and Arai tend to favour a round cranium and HJC Scorpion etc account for a more oval shaped head.

Try a couple of different manufacturers you'll probbly find something that fits a little better then sell yours on ebay or save it as a spare if you cannot take it back.

Sev is right. Different helmets are shaped differently, so a certain size made by one manufaturer can fit differently compared to the same size lid from another maker.

I really wanted to buy an Icon Mainframe helmet last year, but the HJC VR-1 fit me much better, so I went with it. It was 100 bucks cheaper too....

As said above, try a few different manufacturers - you'll find one that fits.

I'm sure there's a Hein Gericke in Sheff - have a pop in there, they tend tobe quite good about helping people with these things...

Seriously though, the Icon made me claustrophobic everything was way to close to my nose, but it fit well otherwise.

Try a different brand, I forget exactly how each helmet fits, but try wearing one around the shop for 15-20 minutes and you'll know if it fits well.

Oh oh oh, this isn't REALLY recomended, but I recall Whytegyphons father mentioning that one time he had pulled the liner off and dremoled down just the little bit that was pressing into his forhead. But doing that would make it REALLY easy to completely ruin a helmet. You're probably better of selling this one and buying one that actually fits.

It's no fun to ride when your helmet stabs you.

I'm guessing that you've got a more "oval" head: longer from forehead to back, than across the ears. Your forehead is pressing into where someone with a more round head would have no trouble. Try another manufacturer, or different model (Arai has 3 head profile models, for very oval, less oval and more round head shapes, some others do too).

Hopefully, you've not worn the helmet to ride in and can exchange it? One very good reason to use a shop where you can walk in and try on.
