After the MSF. If you pass the MSF, you won't have to take your test. At least that's how it works in Michigan. Passing the MSF course atuomatically gets you your license. Therefore, why pay to take a test when paying to take the course also?

In MA you need the permit to take the MSF. Passing the MSF get's you an endorsement which let's you skip the waiting period for the lisence. It takes about as long as it takes you to go to the DMV and pay the man to get your class-m once you get that endorsement.

Call the people running the MSF course you're taking and ask them if you need the permit or not.

Weren't those your only two options to begin with?

I'd take it after hte MSF myself. Might be something you learn in the MSF that'll help you on the test.

i dont know about you guys but im 16.5 yrs old and i'm in cali....went to the dmv with nothing but my drivers licence(identification)...paid $25, got my picture taken....took the written test(without prior studying...it was so easy...common sense)....passed it but border lined.....now after taking the msf, i got a certificate, in 6 months i can just show that to the dmv and get my license...like MEANIE said, if you have the certificate from the msf, then you dont have to take the test at the dmv, you just need to sohw it to them and they mail you your license.

i hope this helped

Well the written test is pretty common sense except for some questions.

Like what to do on an iron grating, how the leader of a staggered formation rides, where to go when passing in a staggered formation, etc.

I also had a borderline pass on mine due to those questions. I didn't learn teh answers to them until I took the test (and it was often on the 'incorrect' screen that I did my learning on.

Depends on your state laws. By my way, you need a drivers license and the permit to get your endorsement from the MSF. If the MSF round your way needs a moto permit to get your endorsement then you obviously get one. If it doesn't, then you don't have to unless you plan on practicing before your MSF course. Then again, you can just ride around without a permit and be a rebel. Yea, I'd do that.

I went ahead and got my permit before my license. It was nice because, you have to have your permit at least 30 days before getting your endorsment...and my MSF class was 35 days after I got my permit.
I didn't have a bike or anything yet...just grabbed a booklet from the license branch, studied it for a few days, took their written test for the permit (passed it, easily), then waited until my MSF class.
Once I passed it, went to the license branch the next Monday, took in my permit, driver's license, and one of the MSF cards and the took a new picture of me with the nice little "M" under the "Endorsements" area.
I did it to sort of help "kill time" before the MSF.
If you don't get your permit...then I believe you'll only be able to ride in the day time, with a helmet, no passengers for the first 30 days after you pass the MSF.
