I just bought a bike, when do I pay the taxes on it? When I register it? When I go to the dmv to show them I bought it?

Hmm...

Maybe I'm not understanding what you're asking but generaly the taxes are figured into the price.

That's why a $3000 bike wouldn't be $3000 flat, it'd be $3240.

Unless you bought it used. If you payed in check or on a credit card or something then they tax you at the end of the year. If you payed in cash, well you try and keep it hidden so they can't tax you on it

ijust my bike yesterday.....it was around 1,992.75....it turned out to be $4500 flat.....around $333 tax and a $175 licencing tax.........it was a used bike...but the other guy takes care of licensing it, going ot the dmv and all that. but if he doesn't do it and you have to do it yourself...just call the dmv and ask them what to do.

this might help:

i think if you change the 'ca' with your state, it'll work.

I bought it used for 8,000 without tax, the tax is $660 so when do I pay the 660 dollars?

Don'tworry, they'll tax you at the end of the year if you payed with check.

Pay with cash and it should be fine though. Uncle Sam won't know about it. But if it goes through a federal institution (like a bank) he'll find out.

In fact, registering your bike will probably make him find out and he'll still charge you taxes for it. But I'd rather register it and pay the taxes on May the 24th (or is it april the 24th? I forget) then pay for getting pulled over with an unregistered vehicle.

Note: I'm not 100% on this admittedly but I think that's correct.

I used a check to pay for it, so I pay when I pay my taxes?

I think it depends what state you live in. I bought both of my bikes off of private sellers, when we went to the DMV to change the title over I had to pay tax to the state on the amount paid for the bike. The state has no way of finding out actually how much you paid for the bike, so usually you can tell them less then you paid to save on tax. Or so I hear.

sounds like buying a used bike in the states really sucks. My first bike I bought used and paid no tax on it whatsoever, for the simple fact that the tax was already paid when the bike was first purchased new, 22 years ago.

Having to pay tax on a vehicle that has already had tax paid on it sounds like a government money grab to me.

Yah, welcome to America.
